Our rehoming process

We work to increase the number of greyhounds rehomed after racing. We encourage prospective adopters and ensure that they understand greyhounds and their needs.

Learn about greyhounds

If you are interested in adopting a retired racing greyhound then the first step is for you to learn as much as possible. Even though we think they are wonderful, they are not for everyone. The following is highly recommended:

Branigan, Cynthia A., Adopting the racing greyhound / Cynthia A. Branigan (New York, NY: Howell Book House, c2003). ISBN 9780764540868.

Branigan is available in New Zealand from: Good Books, Wheelers Books, Fishpond.co.nz, Mighty Ape, The Nile.

Home visit

We will then visit your house, bringing one or two of our own greyhounds. You will be able to see how a greyhound might fit in.

Meeting your greyhound

We will then suggest a greyhound that should be a good match for you and will arrange for you to meet. You will be able to trial your chosen greyhound. Before you take a greyhound on trial we also ask that you sign our:

Placement fee

Hounds 4 Homes charges a placement fee of when you decide to take your chosen greyhound on trial. This fee goes part way to defraying the costs associated with rehoming greyhounds.

Follow up

After you have adopted a greyhound we will provide ongoing advice and support.
